- DIED. Sterling Allen Brown, 87, poet, scholar and authority
- on black-American literature; in Takoma Park, Md. A professor of
- English at Howard University from 1929 to 1969, he won the
- Lenore Marshall poetry prize and was named the District of
- Columbia's poet laureate in 1984. "Done took my livin' as it
- came," wrote Brown, who composed much of his poetry in black
- dialect. "Done grabbed my joy, done risked my life."
